Baseball Videos: A Two Strike Plan Handed Down From Pitching Master Jerry Koosman To Hitting Coach Randy Curtis

Jerry Koosman

Bottom Line,  Great Hitters who hit for average have tough at bats and are very difficult to strike out.

I look at Hitters like Hall Of Famer Tony Gwynn. If you really study his numbers it’s actually incredible what he was able to do. The fact is the more consistently you put the ball in play the more opportunities or chances you will have to get a base hit. So we wanted to create a baseball videos that give you a proven approach while hitting with two strikes.

Jerry Koosman, a member of the N.Y. Miracle Mets team that won the world Series in 1969, was a coach of mine when I was with the N.Y. Mets in the minor leagues my first two seasons (91′ and ’92). He was a former Big League LHP who was tough as nails and was a part of a Starting Pitching rotation that included Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver in the Late 60′s.

“Koos”, although the Pitching coach, would preach to us hitters the importance of putting the ball in play with two strikes. He taught us to just play “pepper” and not to try and do too much. Bat Control, Bat control, come up on the bat etc, etc.

Those were two great learning opportunity years for me as a hitter so we wanted to put the simple plan into a baseball video. Being able to learn from a great pitcher was new for me. But think about it. If you can get the information from a master at getting guys out – then don’t you think you can use that information to help you hit against them? Absolutely!

I remember that he would pitch batting practice to us everyday prior to each game. Honestly, Batting practice against Koos was more difficult than facing the opposing pitcher the same night. I had to be extremely focused just so I wouldn’t break a bat during BP. I’m dead serious. Trust me, he tried everyday to break our bats. He would laugh and laugh when he jammed us or shocked our hands. He had this one pitch he called a “sailor” and that fastball would cut away from me a good two feet. So in BP I was focused on seeing the ball and not trying to do too much and I simply put the ball in play to the off field against him day after day after day after day.

So this morning I thought of Koos and decided to teach my hitters today about having a Plan with Two Strikes. Here is  a baseball videos you can use that will give you “The Two Strike Plan” I used at the plate.

The information is simple. Learn it. Understand it. Stick To it and Increase your batting average 50 points with this two strike plan.

And remember to CHOKE UP with two strikes!

    Hi Troy -

I guess one of the main benefits is the ability to better control the bat. I highly recommend this to players once they are at two strikes, although many players choke up during the entire at bat (Barry Bonds was a prime example). Because you are choked up, the bat becomes a tad lighter and a little shorter thus enhancing and improving the ability to control it better. Sure you are sacrificing some power but you are improving your ability to put the ball in play while in a pitchers count. So you know, hitters at the MLB level have different length and weights of bats. They use a particular bat based on how they feel on a given day or based on who they are facing. These are the adjustments hitters learn to make as they get older and wiser. So its important to know that the good hitters are always thinking and making mental as well as physical adjustments to put the odds more in their favor.

Hope that helps explain my reasoning.
