Not Making the Varsity Baseball didn’t stop Joe Famelette, a senior From Aliso Viejo, Ca. from chasing his dream of playing Baseball in College. In Fact, it motivated him to so much that he passed up most players in his graduation class with his “off the charts” baseball training routine, passion and grades.
As a Junior Joe opted out Of High School baseball altogether when he was placed on the JV team last minute. At the time, he was humiliated and asked his coach what would he need to do to get better and play on the Varsity team. With No answer provided by the coach or hope in sight, Joe chose to play in the ABCL, an alternative High School Baseball League based out of Southern California.
“Getting the 40 plus games in with a wood bat and facing good pitching made all the difference”, said Joe. “It really prepared me for the Summer Academic Showcases and ABD Tournaments I played in”.
Joe had a 4.1 GPA and an 1830 SAT scored so he was smart in deciding to participate in Academic Showcases. He attended the Head First Academic Showcase in California and was approached by (8) eight Schools based on his successful showing by doing all of the little things to make himself stand out among the other players.
Macalester College, Private Liberal Arts College in St. Paul Minnesota showed the most interest and offered Joe an opportunity to play baseball.
Joe followed the baseball recruiting protocol and qualified for a 100% scholarship in grants and financial work programs that equated to over $50,000 a year and over $200,000 guaranteed assistance over the 4 years. Not bad for never playing Varsity Baseball.
“The Game and schools Baseball Recruiting budgets are changing. Opportunities for great exposure are decreasing so it’s important to have a really good Baseball Recruiting Plan based on the type of player and Student you are. Joe took advantage of his grades, his relationship with the ABD Academy and his ability. He deserves this and paid attention to detail. He really was being the right person and never quit.” Randy Curtis, ABD Academy.
Get This…Joe, now a Senior, is finally playing Varsity Baseball. He is Starting and is currently leading the team in hitting. Go Figure…

I’m very happy for Joe. This story really shows a never say die or never stop trying attitude. Joe had a dream to play college baseball and never gave up on that dream.
Nice going Joe! And to ABD for providing the opportunities and resources for players to help realize their potential. Great story!
